What does Rosh Chodesh have to do with women?

Pirkei d'Rabbi Eliezer, ch. 45

After we were given the Torah, Moshe Rabbeinu went up to Heaven for 40 days. The men miscalculated when he would return and started to panic. They decided to make a Golden Calf, hoping to find a savior, someone to lead them.

They came to their wives and asked for their jewelry. The women refused and would have no part in it. Their instincts were fine-tuned, and their trust in Hashem was strong. Each woman, on her own, sensed that this was the wrong move.

As a reward, Hashem gave them Rosh Chodesh as a special day, to be kept by women even more than by men. Later, when it came time to build the Mishkan, the women happily gave away their jewels, mirrors and gold.

Our Sages add that righteous women are destined to be renewed, just like the new moon. The moon wanes and returns, month after month, never losing its light for good. A woman knows how to begin again, too.

Because Rosh Chodesh is our day, women have a long-standing custom to refrain from certain work on Rosh Chodesh, such as sewing or laundry, each according to her family's minhag. The Shulchan Aruch calls it a good custom. It's a day set apart for us: to celebrate, to gather, and to sing Hallel.
